About Power Play Units

This site measures which NHL players were actually on the ice for each club's power play, second by second, from the league's own shift charts and play-by-play.

Everywhere else, a power-play unit is a list somebody typed after watching a morning skate. Here it is a measurement: the five skaters who shared the most power-play ice, credited for the seconds that five was the one out there. The two are not the same list, and the difference is the point.

Who runs this

I’m Rich Jasinski. I grew up playing hockey in Montreal — a Habs kid who also couldn’t look away from those Oilers teams and Gretzky doing things nobody had numbers for yet. I’ve loved fantasy pools just as long, and every season I ran one I had the same frustration: the data I actually wanted — who is really on the first unit, right now, measured rather than rumoured — didn’t exist anywhere.

So I built it. I love data, I love the analysis, and mostly I love answering the exact question a manager is asking at 7 in the morning before waivers clear. Every page is generated from one nightly computation, so the site and the email can never disagree about the same player.

What this site does not do

There is no forecasting model here, no projected or nominated lineups, and no market data of any kind — nothing on this site is priced and nothing claims an advantage. It measures the unit a coach actually deployed, and publishes that. The method page lists everything this project deliberately does not track, and why.

Power Play Units is an independent publication and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by the National Hockey League, its member clubs, or the NHL Players’ Association. NHL and team names are used to identify the subject of factual reporting and analysis. All statistics are computed independently from publicly available play-by-play data. Photography is licensed stock and shows no NHL clubs, marks or players.
